[by telegraph.] Christchurch, This day. Tho Canterbury Jockey Club's annual meeting was held yesterday. The treasurer's statement showed that £6070 had been paid in stakes this year, as against .£4974 last year. Tho report stated that the condition of the club was improving, the liability to tho bank being reduced from £4388 to '.£2IBB. The New Year's Day meeting was bo successful that it should bo mado a regular fixture. There had been £420 expended on shifting the stand, &c.; £131 had been spent on a railway to tho course, and £173 on improving l tho train gallop, It was

proposed to lay down another. The totalisator had realised £2838. The nominations for tho Derby 1883 were 38, and for 1884 they were 52. A similar increase was shown in the Welcome and Champagne Stakes. The grounds, &c, were in good order, and it was proposed to have ornamental planting. Tho balance-sheet showed receipts £10,400, and the expenditure £690 exclusive of £6GIG on account of tho grand stand. The liabilities were £2651, aud the assets £9168. It was proposed to appoint a paid handicapper and to ask other clubs to accept him and contribute towards his salary, but it Avas negatived. An increase in the secretary's salary was recommended to the committee. A proposal fixing the minimum weight in handicaps at Gst 71b was agreed to, and tho last rule fixing the top weight at Bst 10lb was struck out.
