Dunedin, This day. An inquest Avas held on Saturday at Cavcrshfim on the body of a child two and a half years old named Cecil George D wight. His mother g.-n-c evidence that on Sunday afternoon, the 15th inst., she Avas in town Avith the child and her baby. As they Avere passing along Princes-street, near AVise's corner,' a large mastiff dogbounded up against tho child, who avus clinging to her skirt, and knocked him down. The apparent owner of the dog picked the boy up, and after saying that he did not seem to be much hurt went away. Blood Avas, hoAVCA'or, gushing from one of the child's ears, and lie could not stand up. He ay.-is taken to Or Mauusell, avlio attended the boy until lie died on Thursday last. The owner of the dog has been advertised for, but had not made himself known. Tho coroner, in summing up, commented strongly on the indifference displayed by the owner of the dog in regard to the occurence. The jury returned a verdict of "accidental death," adding a rider expressing the opinion "That largo dogs should not bo allowed to go about the streets unless under the strict and sufficient control of those iii charge of them."
