DEBATE IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS ON THE NEW GUINEA ANNEXATION.
THE PHCENIN PARK MURDER TRIALS. — DISAGREEMENT OF JURY IN KELLY'S CASE. CONFLICTING REPORTS KF DATE OF CZAR OF RUSSIA'S CORONATION. LONDON. April 21. In tho House of Lords last evening Lord Carnarvon, formerly Secretary of State for the Colonies, revicAved the question of the annexation of Ncav Guinea, and in the course of his speech vindicated the motives Avhicli prompted the recent action of the Queensland Government. Lord Derby, in reply, stated that the matter had been brought under the notice of the Colonial Office months ago by Air Thos. Archer, tho Queensland Agent-General, Avho advanced strong reasons for the annexation of the island, unci asked whether the Imperial Government Avould sanction it, stating that Queensland Avas prepared to provide for the necessary expenditure of governing the island. Sir Arthur Kennedy had been requested to report upon the question, and his despatches Avere still awaited. Lord Derby added that the news that an agent of the Queensland GoA'erniucnt had taken possession of the island had therefore caused groat surprise, no pledge huA-ing been given that such action Avould be sanctioned, Tho jury in the case of Timothy _ Kelly, the third of the prisoners charged with the Phoenix Park murders, have been unable to agree upon a verdict, and have retired until Mouday.
Recent telegrams are to hand from St. Petersburg stating that the coronation of the Czar Avill take place on May 27th, the date previously fixed, and not on June 10th as announced ou the lGtli inst. Tlie Times, hoAvever, in its issue this morning, considers the report a hoax.
