CR. MARGOLIOUTH'S NOTICE OF MOTION.
[To the Editor, of the Daily Telegraph.] Sin, —AV'. you grant mc space to make a few remarks ou the above subject. You state in this CA'eni-.ig's issue that Cr. Margoliouth has given notice to mo\*o at. tho next meeting of the Municipal Council " That the Toavu Clerk be instructed to sue for all rates unpaid on the Ist of May next, n-Ulund respect of persons. Might! ask, has there been respect te persons up to the present. Has the poorer class of ratepayers been singled out and put to expense, and tie Jaoi'o wealthy allowed, to go scot free.
This is the impression amongst a large section of the smaller ratepayers. I hope it is not the case, and that the borough officials can prove to the contrary. But, Sir, lioav comes it that there is between £400 and £500 due for rates ending April, 1881 and 1882. I know poor man avlio have been sued for rates during theses periods, and more Avcalthy ones avlio have not. Sir, alloAv me to suggest to Cr. Margoliouth or some other equally independent member the justice of moAing that the defaulters lists for the years ISBO, 1881, and 18S2 be laid on the table of the Council, also a list of the names of persons aa-lio have been sued during same periods. This should be done in justice to those avlio have been put to expense and annoyance. Sir, in leaving this matter in your hands I, Avith a large number of small ratepayers, feel that you Avill sift the matter thoroughly as you have ahvays fearlessly done in the past Avhenever abuses crept into borough affairs. Thanking you iv anticipation for the insertion of these few remarks. —I am, kc, Small Ratepayer. Apiill3, ISB3.
