FATAL ACCIDENT AT DEEP STREAM.

Du.vkdix, This day. A fatal accident occurred on Tuesday aftenioon at the Deep Stream section of the Otago Central railway. Some men wv.'e at work removing-a large mass of rock projecting over the river. A blast had been fired at 1 o'clock, and the men were afterAvard shifting the rock" loosened by the shock. AVhilst thus occupied a fragment upon Avhich three men stood suddenly gave Avay, and one Edward Joyce, fell over one hundred feet down into the river and Avas drowned, Avhilst AVilliani AVilliams, the foreman, slipped a great distance, and Avas found lying on a bank close to the water, his right arm being broken in two places, and lie having two ribs fractured, his collar bone dislocated, and further seriously cut about the face and body. The third, named AVright, managed to get his fingers into a cleft in the rock and hung so 1.3(1 feet above the water until a rope was thrown him, and he Avas rescued. At the inquest yesterday on the body of Joyce a verdict of accidental death was returned. The deceased leaves a very large family, and the other man avlio is so seriously injured is similarly circumstanced in this respect.
