DEATH BY DROWNING AT THE WHITE CLIFFS.

John Riybv. a constable in the Armed Constabulary "force, left the AVhite Cliff camp yesterday morning to assist Air Joshua Jones and party with their horses round the point on the beach on their way to Mokau. On noaring the tunnel he rode one of the horses, and led the other two. The horse he Avas riding turned restive Avhile swimming, and he Avas not seen after rounding the point. It is supposed that he avus Avashcd off by a Avave and drowned. Captain Messenger went Avith a boat's ctcav at once to the spot, and the man dived Avithout result. In the evening grappling irons Avere obtained, and the body was recovered in about eight feet of Avatcr close to the Cliffs. An inquest Avill be held to-day.
