HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING.

FIRST DAY. The s'aort telegrams forwarded, from the course yesterday, AAdiile forestalling the results of tho three first events, omitted particulars that may be of interest to our readers. Although the weather was temptingly fine for a general holiday, and the bright fresh appearance of tho country Avas a treat to behold, it was noticeable that there Ava.s not such a large attendance as there Avas last year. The trains took more persons by one hundred from Napier to Hastings last year than the> r did on this occasion, and fcAver people came up from the southern districts. Another feature in the attendance Avas tho almost total absence of Maoris, very fcAV indeed being on the ground, the native gathering at Omahu being- no doubt the cause. In accordance Avith tho law of the land there Avere no amusements to be had except from an unhappy looking Aunt Sally, which seemed to attract some attention in default of anything- better. The Garrison band certainly cnliA-eued the proceedings, and it Avas amusing to see male folks dancing AA'ith each other iv pure Avcarincss of spirit—they did not want to get drunk, and there Avas nothing else to do. As time goes on avo may hope to sec tho results of goody-goody legislation taking the form of preaching from the grandstand, and psalm singing in tho saddling paddock. There was plenty to eat and drink to be had, and tho catering throughout by Mr Watt and Mr McCartney in the grand stand luncheon room and booth respectively, and by Mr Ashton and Mr Vaughan in the outside booths, Avas spoken of most favorably. The totalisators did brisk business, and paid good dividends, the largest being on Mischief's win in the big Handicap, Avhen £'29 AA'ore paid in the hnvn on £2, and £12 7s outside on £1 tickets.

The racing avus very good, every event being Avell contested.

The 31aiden Plate had an exciting finish betAveen Leonato and Frederica, and the time was much better than in the Napier Handicap. Tho Welter Handicap, for Avluch only four started, Avas very prettily though sloavlv rtn. Canard Avas supposed to be good enougli to Avin, and being top Avcight the speed Avas all in his I'aA-or. Loch "Lomond, hoAveA-er, shoAved in all his old form, and refused to be beaten at the post, Avhich Avas Canard's intention. An unusually large field Avas brought together by tho Napier Handicap, no less than eleven out of thirteen acceptors facing the starter. A report having got abroad that Mischief " Avas not fit," Luna and Leonora became hot favorites. The appearance of Mischief, while Avalking in the saddling paddock prior to ringing up, "as stiff as a crutch," confirmed public opinion, and those avlio had backed her looked upon their money as gone. There were a few, hoAvever, avlio pinned their faith on the plucky mare, and they A-crily met AA'ith their reAvard. Her win was extremely popular, and those aa-lio had suffered in purse even cheered Avhen she came in to weigh. The folloAving events also were run :— NURSERY PLATE, Of IOOsoa's; for tAvo-year-olds ; colts, Sst olb: fillies and geldings, Sst 21b ; distance, I mile.
