FURTHER PARTICULARS OF THE WRECK OF THE KETCH EMERALD
Wellington. This day. Tho crcAA- of vessel give the following particulars of the above occurrence: —Tiic ketch left Oamaru on Friday last with a cargo of 2'jO sacks of oats, 230 sacks of pollard, and SI sacks of potatoes : passed Capo Campbell at 11 p.m. on Sunday, the Avcather being clear, with a strong S.E. breeze. During the night it came on A - ery thick and the Avind increased. At 2 a.m. on Monday, as PeiicarroAV light could not be made out, the captain lioa-o tho vessel to. At 0 a.m. it was found that the ketch had drifted into Palliscr Bay. Everything that Avas possible Avas tried to beat out, but in consequence of the heavy sea they Avere unsuccessful, and the ketch Avcnt ashore about 0 o'clock in the evening on a shingle beach. A quantity "f water at once found its way into tho hold, damaging the cargo. The crew had great difficulty in getting onshore in consequence of the heavy surf that was rolling in. The farmers in the locality rendered great assistance by hauling in the ketch's boat, a rope having been drifted in on apiece of wood. The crew remained by the vessel until (i o'clock on Wednesday morning, when, Avith the exception of the captain, they came into tOAvn, arriving at 7 o'clock the same night. It will be difficult to get the vessel off the beach again. Tho cargo Avas i'ullv insured. It Avas consi_-nod to .Messrs Ha sell and Co. It Avill be remembered that: this A'esscl Avas very much damaged at Kaikoura a short time since, and had only been repaired a Aveek or so ago.
