ROWING MATCH AT WELLINGTON.

The four-oar outrigged race between the Union Club, Christehureh, and the Star Club, Wellington, Avas rowed at . o'clock yesterday afternoon. The course Avas tAVO miles. The folloAving were Ihe crews: — Wellington: Gibbes stroke, C. Smith No. 3, 15. Stock No. 2. and Batkin Ijoav. Christehureh: Fuller stroke, Kesieviu No. •'), Rue No. 2, and Johnson boAv. The Wellington men averaged a pound or tAvo more than the Southern men, and they trusted their steering to the bow, Avhilc Ihc Christehureh men carried a cox. The steamer Huia carried tho referee (Mr F. M. Ollivier). the umpires (Mr Knapp for "Wellington,' and Mr Shand for Christehureh), and tho Press, visitors, and a largo number of the public. A splendid start Avas cheered, both crews gripping the Avatcr simultaneously. 1 n the fir-t minute -11 strokes Avere registered by each, and the boats avci-c almost level. Another couple of minutes found the visitors roAving 30 strokes, Avhile Wellington dropped to 30. Tho Wellington boat could now be seen forging ahead, and tho boAvoar steering a splendid course they

gained a length. The A'Uitors lost some distance by bad steering on the part of their eoxsAvain. When half the distance Avas covered Wellington took- a most decided lead, and gave the A-isitors their back AA'ash. The Christehureh men roAved very pluckily throughout, and kept a faster stroke than their opponents, but they could never reduce the distance Avhich separated them from tho leading- boat. "When a mile and a half had been roAved the Wellington crew eased doAvn, and pulled in easy winners by five lengths. The time avus llmins. -iUsees. The water Avas exceptionally smooth and suitable for racing.
