THE RECENT HEAVY RAIN—GREAT DAMAGE CAUSED THEREBY.
Wanganui, This day. Heavy rain again fell yesterday and by midnight the river had risen to the highest point reached by the flood of Friday. A good deal of damage Avas done in the country districts to roads and bridges. At the heads twenty-eight spans of staging for the new brcakAvater Avere Avasned doAvn, and the engine and pile-di-hing apparatus was })rceipitated ito the river. The contractor's loss is estimated at over £500. The channel at the heads has also shifted further south. It is the heaviest flood known for six years, and is considered equal to the big flood of IS7G. Neav Plymouth, This day. Very heavy rain fell during Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday morning till about 4 o'clock. The rivers have not been so high for years, yet the only damage to bo heard of is a culvert on the Waitara railway line bursting and ripping up about two lengths of rail, Ai'hich Avas repaired yesterday, and the culvert bursting the roadway on the junction of the road bctivcon New Plymouth and Ingleivood. At 'YV aitara about two hundred feet of a temporary stone ivall Avas undermined and Avashcd doAvn, and some other damage done to the extent of £(50 or £70. At the New Plymouth harbor Avorks there lias been a landslip near the fishing rock, Avhieh will assist the next blasting.
