HAWKE'S BAY EDUCATION BOARD.
THIS DAY
The Board met at 11 a.m. Present: Mr J. D. Ormond (chairman). Captain Russell, and Messrs F. Sutton, M.H.R., W. White, and J. N. Williams. ELECTION OF MEMBERS The nominations for the three seats at the Board rendered vacant by the annual retirement of three members in accordance with section 16 of the Education Act resulted in the unanimous re-appointment of Messrs J. D. Ormond, S. Locke, and Captain Russell. CORRESPONDENCE. The following inward correspondence was read :— From Waipawa, applying to have grant for erection of porch and belfry increased from £40 to £60, the amount of the accepted tender.—Agreed to From Mr Sunderland, late commissioner Patutahi district, stating that at a meeting of householders held there on January 22nd it was decided not to elect a committee, but to leave the Board to appoint a commission, as was done last year. —Approved. From Waerenga-a-hika, recommending the appointment of Miss Keenan as teacher. —Approved. From Mr R. Lamb, accepting the position of architect to the Board, subject to the condition by which the Board reserves to itself the right to employ local men in places difficult of access, and where travelling expenses would be high. From Norsewood, stating that, at a meeting of committee held on the 1st instant, Douglas Beddingfield was recommended as a pupil teacher.—Consideration deferred. From chairman. Tarawera committee, respecting the erection of the new school at that place.—lt was agreed that the Board would extend the grant to £80 on condition that the residents erect the buildings in accordance with the plans submitted by the Board's architect. From Matawhero, forwarding the following resolution passed by the householders at their annual meeting, "That the committee be requested by this meeting to consider the advisability of recommending to the Board the necessity of having a duly certificated master appointed to the Matawhero school."—The Board decided to adopt the recommendation, Mr Bolton, the present master, to receive three months' notice that his services will not be required. From Napier committee, recommending the appointment of Kate Dunn and Thomas Lindsay as pupil teachers.—Agreed to, the former to take rank as a pupil teacher of the first year, and the latter as a candidate. From Heretaunga, recommending the appointment of Mrs Alexander as teacher, and guaranteeing a salary of £70 per annum.—Agreed to. From Makatoku, applying to have a teacher's residence erected. —Agreed that the grant to that district be expended in the direction required. From the secretary to the Board, inclosing, for the information of the Minister for Education, the public notification of the election of Messrs J. D. Ormond, S. Locke, and Captain Russell as members of the Board for the year ending March 31st, 1886. From Clive, recommending the appointment of a female assistant teacher capable of giving instructions in sewiug, instead of three pupil teachers as at present.—Agreed to. From Frasertown, applying for a grant of £16 for fencing. —Resolved that the fencing be included in the district grant. From Ashley Clinton, asking permission to close the school owing to whooping cough being prevalent amongst the scholars. —Approved. From Messrs Dinwiddie, Walker and Co., offering to print and bind annual report, as per copy SEbmitted [submitted], at 11s 9d per page for 200 copies. From the secretary School Commissioners, Auckland, in reply to the Board's application, stating that the commissioners had passed a resolution setting aside as a site for a public school at Gisborne town allotments 202 and 203.—The secretary was instructed to reply thanking the commissioners for the reserves. The remaining correspondence was possessed of no public interest. REPORTS. The annual report of the Inspector to the Board, also that of the Board to the Minister of Education, were read and approved. The Board then adjourned.
