THE POVERTY BAY OIL SPRINGS.
(Standard, February 14.) KOIT.HBEX CROSS I'ETEOLEUIT COMPANY. We sincerely trust that the existing difficulties with reference to the failure or non-failure of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company will soon be numbered amongst the things that were. By yesterday's steamer from the south there were landed in Gisborne four gentlemen who are capable of giving an expert opinion upon this most important question, viz. : The future of the oil springs of Poverty Bay. The gentlemen in question were Mr Motley, of Napier, Mr W. H. Spackman, Mr T. B. Craig- and Mr E. Wickes, of Christchurch. We do not think the work could have been entrusted to better hands, or more clever financiers. Mr Motley is well-known as a shrewd business man, Mr Spackinan is a clover and much respected banister and solicitor residing- in Christchurch, Mr Thomas Brown Craig is one of the ablest accountants in the Southern Island, with a very large experience and a splendid business, and Mr Wickes is also known for his commercial knowledge and far-seeing-capabilities. We do not think that the problem to be solved could be left in better hands, or alloted to wiser heads. SOUTH PACIFIC PETROLEUM COMPANY. The mine manager reports that he has been uiiable to drive the pipe plumb through the obstructing boulder. He has therefore drawn the pipes, and will resume operations in another spot.
