HARBOR BOARD ELECTION.

DECLARATION OF THE POLL.

Punctually at noon to-day Mr G-. W. C alien, the returning officer, attended at the old Provincial Chamber for the purpose of / declaring-the state of the poll for the election of municipal representatives at the Harbor Board. A good number of electors were present. Having read the 35th and 43rd sections of the Local Elections Act with reference to the mode of malting , known the result of the poll, Mr Cullen declared the voting to be as follows :—• ,A John Wainhouse Ncal ~ 517 Henry Williams .. .. 45(5 John Alexander Smith .. 2G7 David Balharry .. .. 263 Henry Monteith .. ~ 162 Edward Lyndon .. .. 10(5 Messrs Neal, "Williams, and Smith wore therefore declared to be didy elected. The declaration was received with cheers. Mr Neal came forward, and said he desired to sincerely thank the electors for the honor conferred upon him, and trusted his action as a member of the Harbor Board would give satisfaction, and that he would continue to receive the cordial support of r the electors, that had been accorded to liiin on this occasion. (Applause). Mr Williams expressed himself as much gratified at the result of the election so fa? as it concerned himself, and thanked ttib burgesses for his return. With respecf to the question of a breakwater at Napier everyone knew it was one of the greatest necessities of the province, and unless a good breakwater was obtained the town must dwindle down until it became a very insignificant place indeed. Before the next Harbor Board election he hoped to see a good permanent breakwater well under way, and trusted.the day was not far distant when vessels requiring a draft of 2o or 30 feet of water would be lying alongside our wharf. He felt that ho must also express li is congratulations with those of the Napier people on the result of the election of the Waipawa representatives. There had been a certain amount of dirty work done in /~ "* that connection by a man in town.
