KAIKORA.
Twenty-one householders in this district assembled in the school-room on Monday night for the purpose of electing a School Committee for the ensuing year. Mr AVhite took the chair by appointment, and read the report for the past year, AA-liich shoAvcd that various repairs and improi-e----ments had been earned out during the year, of AA'hich the folloAving are the most prominent, namely—a iioav Avell had been | dug for master's use, and a pump attached [ thereto; the teacher's house had been added to and renovated ; the Committee, in conjunction Avith the Education Board, had paid for the acre of land purchased from Mr Watts for a play-ground, the price being £60, of AA'hich the Education Board paid half; a dividing fence betAA-een Mr AVatts' land and the school play-ground had been erected, and the boy's and girl's closets had been placed more apart. The report, also stated that the Committee had, through the generosity of Mr Lawrence and thepublic by a subscription list, been able to offer A-aluablc and substantial prizes for competition in the school last Christmas. The report concluded by stating that the Committee had much pleasure iv recording the marked improvement the school hadmado under Mr Naylor's management. Miss HoAvard, the assistant, was also eulogised for the large per centagc of passes in her department at the last annual examination, and Miss Solcy, the pupil teacher, wasspoken of as being a careful and painstakingteacher. The report Avound up by suggesting Jth at the next important appendage to the school should be a shed for dining scholars from a long distance,' and ultimately to be furnished Avith gymnastic apparatus. The balance-sheet Avas then read and approA-ed, and Avas as follows :—Receipts for the year from all sources, £105 12s 6d; expenditure, £90 4s Id; thus leaving a balance of £15 8s 5d in hand. The retiring Committee then received a unanimous vote of thanks, and the following persons Averc nominated and A'oted for in the undermentioned order:—AA r . White, 24 votes; R. Tod, 14 A-otcs; Mcrrylccs, 25 votes; Ingleton, 17 A-otcs; NeAVton, 16 votes ; Grey, 8_ votes ; Gibson, 16 votes ; Hicks, 11 votes; Fletcher, 7 A-otcs. Messrs Dillon and Larwcnce acted as scrutineers, and found one paper informal. At the first meeting of the ne\v committee Mr AVhite was again re-elected chairman, and Mr J. K. NeAvton as treasurer and secretary, both gentlemen having fulfilled those duties most satisfactorily during the past year.
