LAUNCH OF THE UNION STEAMSHIP COMPANY'S WAIHORA.

The Union s.s. Waihora, 2003 tons (gross measurement) was launched at Dumbarton on 30th November, the christening ceremony being performed by Miss Brock, of Levcnford House, Dumbarton. The dimensions of the Waihora arc :—Length between perpendiculars, 255 feet; breadth (moulded), ;j6feet; depth (moulded), 25 feet. She has been constructed of Siemens-Martin steel, under special survey of Lloyd's, and classed in their registry 100 Al, three decked. She is built on the continuous cellular-bottom principle Avith solid floors, and adapted for water ballast. Throughout the machinery space the structural system of deep plate frames and hold side stringers has been adopted. She will have accommodation for 12-1 first-class passengers on main and upper decks, and 80 second-class passengers on main deck. The officers and engineers -will be accommodated in midship sidehouses under bridge deck, and the fireman and crcAv will occupy the forecastle. The vessel Avill bo fitted by Messrs Denny and Co. with compouud surface-condensing engines, haA-ing cylinders oSin. and CSiu. diameter, and the stroke of piston, 45in. While being constructed the Waihora has been under the inspection of Mr John Darling, superintending engineer of the company. [by cable.] Sydney, This day.
