This day

Great interest was manifested here in the race between the Union steamship Mana-

pouri and the mail steamer City of Sydney, which left here for Sydney last Tuesday evening. A .special cablegram from a passenger to the Star shews that, reckoning the differences in the time of departure from Auckland, the vessels made the voyage within five minutes of each other, both doing the distance in four days two hours, or an average of a small fraction of over thirteen miles an hour.
