AUCKLAND.

November 30,

A disastrous fire occurred at Onehunga this morning about 3 o'clock, which destroyed Codlin's hay store, Kelsall's bakery and dwelling, Keleall's cottage, Bradley's store and dwelling, Spalding's store and dwelling, and George's cottage. The insurances on the New Zealand office are — Spalding £400, Bradley £500, Kelsall's bakery and store £780, ditto cottage £150, Codlin's store £75 ; in the Colonial office George's cottage is insured for £2CO. Bradley lost £200 worth ot posts, rails, &c, and a £50 gold watch. The total loss is about £4000. The fire broke out in Codlin's place, but there is no clue to its origin.

The Coffee Palace Company is to be wound up. The sale of the site realised £3000. The shareholders who paid their calls will get a fair return of the money paid.

Richard Healey, Thomas Stewart, Peter Young, Joseph Roderiguer, Beniamin Sutherland, George Dean, and John Erickson, seven ot the crew of the steamer Wellington, were committed for trial yesterday on the charge of the robbery of £662 worth of jewellery from on board the steamer.

At the inquest yesterday on the body

of Hugh Hamilton, who fractured his skull by falling against the post of the bedstead on entering his bedroom in the dark, the evidence showed the deceased had returned home intoxicated. A verdict of accidental death was returned.

The local directors here of the Mutual Life Association of Sydney have purchased a splendid block of land in Queenstreet at a cost of £7000, upon which it is intended to erect handsome offices and buildings. The Mutual Life Company intend pushing their New Zealand business vigorously, and to invest some of their surplus funds in this colony. At a meeting of Catholics in St. Patrick's Hall last evening, Mr Daniel Lynch presiding, Mr James Cook, of Wellington, explained the objects and principles of the Colonial Land Settlement and Endowment Association of New Zealand, After some discussion a resolution was unanimously passed approving of the principles and objects of the scheme. There was a good attendance, and a good deal of interest was shown in in the project.
