Robert Ewing, residing at Knightstown, was arrested last night for attempted arson. While in a state of intoxication he quarrelled with his wife, and collecting his furniture in a heap, set fire to it. Fortunately some neighbors extinguished the flames before much damage was done to the building.
At a meeting of the West Coast Railway League last night it was resolved to request tbe Government to issue a special commission for enquiring into the proposed line of railway to the West Coast. A letter from the Colonial Secretary was read at tbe meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday requesting the Board to take steps to provide funds for the hospital and charitable aid for the latter half of the financial year provoked a warm discussion. The Mayor of Christcburch characterised the letter as unbusinesslike and unconstitutional, seeing that twothirds of the financial year had expired. It was ultimately agreed to reply that the Board would do its best to ascertain what was practicable in the direction proposed, but did not expect that the investigation would lead to any appreciable relief to the burdens of the hospital and charitable aid during the coming financial year.
Mr R. Webb has been elected Mayor of Lyttelton by 195 votes to 131 for the other candidate, Mr B. Weyburn.
