At the R.M. Court yesterday William Hall was accused of working machinery at Brookside on September 19th without a certificate from the Inspector of Machinery, and of failing to report to the Inspector the occurrence of an accident having occurred to Michael llandington within twenty - four hours after it happened, contrary to the Inspector of Machinery Act, 1882. Mr Martin appeared to prosecute. Mr Joynt appeared for the defendant, and while admitting the facts pointed out that the Act under which the information was laid only came into force on September 10th last, and had been placed in circulation only the other day. He submitted tbat as the penalties were extremely heavy the Bench might, dismiss the case. Mr Martin, in reply, explained that the clauses under which action was taken were identical with those of the Act previously in force. Both informations were dismissed because defendant could not be taken to be acquainted with the j new Act, and because one of tbe wituesses j averred that the Inspector had been appointed under the Act of this year, whereas he was appointed under the old Act.
Thewreetling match between Robinson and Slade, which was continued last night, was won by the former by one fall.
