The dead body found in the river at Helensville has been identified as that of a man na'tied Ferguson, who had been engaged to clean the bottom of the cutter Glorian.
At a meeting yesterday of the shareholders of the South British Insurance Company the resolutions passed at the extraordinary meeting for increasing the capital were unanimously confirmed. The stewards of the Auckland Racing Club held an enquiry yesterday as to the alleged pulling of Merlin in the late Consolation Race at the spring meeting. The stewards thought the evidence adduced scarcely strong enough, but severely censured Wheeler, the owner of the horse.
A Lodge of Druids, numbering over fifty, was successfully inaugurated last night by Mr Bishop, District President, from Wellington.
The opening of the railway extension from Whangarei to Deep Water was celebrated yesterday by a trip on the line at the invitation of the contractors.
