The deceased officer was formerly a captain in H.M. 62nd Regiment, of which he was Adjutant, and for his services in that capacity was presented with a sword by Lord Frederick FitzClareoce, then commandant at Portsmouth. Retiring from the British army, Colonel Lambert, with his family, settled in this colony, arriving at Wellington in the year 1856, and, soon after coming to Hawke'a Bay, acquired a considerable property in the Ruatauiwha district, where for many years he pursued the peaceful avocation of a sheepfarmer. Colonel Lambert supported the movement for the separation of Hawke's Bay from WelliDgton, and sat in the Council of this district for Te Aute until the Abolition Act centered the government at' Wellington. During the native war Colonel Lambert was appointed a major of militia, and afterwards was promoted to.a Lieut.-colonelcy. Throughout the native troubles Colonel Lambert held a command in this district, and led the abortive expedition to Mchaka. At the time of bis death the deceased gentleman was a member of the Waste Lands Board and of the Harbor Board, at both of which his sound common sense and liberal views were repeatedly favorably commended on by the local press.
