October 9. At the Supreme Court today Adams, convicted of conspiracy, was brought up for sentence. In a lengthy statement he denied his guilt, and contended that he had been found guilty on false evidence. Judge Richmond said the case was an extraordinary one, and he intended not to make any comments on it at present. There were certain points requiring further consideration, and he would postpone judgment. The prisoner would be admitted to bail on finding sureties for £200. A breach of promise case, Miss Sweeney v. Leybourne, a Government clerk, was commenced this morning. The action is brought to recover £800 damages. The cricket season was opened with great eclat on Saturday. A lunch was given in the afternoon, at which Sir James Prendergast, Acting-Governor, the Hon. Mr Whitaker, Premier, Messrs C. Johnston, W. H. Levin, and W. Hutchison, M.H.R.s, and the Mayor and City Councillors were pre.nt. The counsel for the prosecution m the late conspiracy case against Adams and his daughter has written to the Minister of Justice informing him of the verdict returned by the jury, and praying that Longhurst be released. A telegram received from the Lyell states that splendid gold has been struck at the Victor Emmanuel miDe, New Creek. Some specimens brought down on Saturday surpass anything obtained in the district for many years.
