LONDON.
September 1. Entrenchments have been discovered in the desert near Kassassin. They will be attacked shortly by our troops. The Porte has offered to surrender the disputed frostier in Thessaly on conditions, but Greece has rejected tbe offer. The steamer Lake Pigion has been wrecked off Arklow, a seaport town on the south-east coast of Wicklow. Five boats with passengers are missing. September 2. The boats missing from the steamer which grounded at Arklow have turned np Bafe. The shipment of frozen meat by the steamer Austral has arrived in moderate condition, and realised an average of 6d per lb. At the wool sales to day 104,000 bales were catalog ued, of which 80,000 were withdrawn. Prices for good merinos and fine cross-breds have slightly improved, but there is no alteration for inferior sorts. Sir Hardinge Gifford, Q.C., is likely to have early promotion to the Bench. He was appointed Solicitor-General in Mr Disraeli's Administration in 1875, and shortly afterwards received the honor of Knighthood. In 1877 he was elected M.P. for Launceston. September 3. A conference of miners at Manchester has approved of a general strike in October. Two thousand Orangemen have offered their services as special constables in Ireland. Tbe cargo of frozen meat received per steamer Lusitania averaged s|d per lb. Quarantine regulations delay the completion of the Indian contingent for Egypt. The Imperial Government will supply the balloons asked for by Sir Garnet Wolseley. The new camp discovered is 10 miles from Kassassin. Turkey proposes to land her troops at Alexandria, and march them to Aboukir. The Bedouins are now supplying provisions to the British forces.
