CHRISTCHURCH.

September 1

About 6 o'clock last evening James Carpeuter, licensee of the Plough Hotel, Rangiora, was discovered hanging from a bluegum tree in a remote part of the garden attached to the hotel. He left home about half-past eight on the proceeding evening, after having apparently spent an enjoyable day coursing, and as he had expressed an intention of proceeding to Ghristchurch next day his wife did not immediately institute enquiries concerning hi«n. Mrs Carpenter received a severe shock on discovering him hanging. The deceased bore an irreproachable character as particularly steady and sober. What had led to the supposed euicide cannot be divined.

The balance-sheet read at the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday showed receipts £548 6s 9d ; and expenditnre, £382 12s lid. Mr J. W. Mears was elected President for the year.

A bicyclist brought an action against the owner of a drag which colided with him in High-street through being on the wrong side of the road, but the Bench dismissed the case, holding that the Public Works Act under which it was laid, did not apply to streets in boroughs.
