EDUCATION BOARD.

THIS DAY. The Board met at 10 o'clock. Present:—Messrs Ormond (chairman), Dobson, Sutton, Tanner, J. N.Williams, Harding and the Rev. D. Sidcy. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Ashley-Clinton Committee, proposing that the vacation shall commence on the 23rd instead of the 16th. Granted. From Danevirk, calling attention to the disrepair of the teacher's residence. No funds. From the Frasertown Committee, requesting the erection of a residence, or a house allowance for the teacher, and stating that there could be an average attendance of 40 if the school building were repaired. House allowance granted. No funds for building. From the same, applying for the appointment of a sewing mistress. Average attendance does not warrant such an appoiniment. From the Heretaunga Committee, asking that £40 or £50 be placed to the credit of the committee to pay the contractor. Progress payment granted. From the newly appointed teacher at Kaikora, acknowledging appointment.

From Kaikora Committee, re appointment of Miss Howard as mistress. Appointment granted, subject to passing certificate examination in 1883.

From Mr J. B. Poynter, covering petition from householders at Waerenga-a-Hika, praying that the school at that place may be put under the management of a local committee. Approved. From the same, pointing out that the grant last quarter for school-house cleaning at Te Arai fell short by £l. The sum of £3 15a \va3 granted for this quarter. From secretary Meance Committee, forwarding resignation of Miss A. Baldwin as pupil teacher. Accepted. From Mr K. Toms, Matawhero, asking for the payment of the seat of his residence, 7s a week. Granted.

From Taradale Committee, submitting the offer of the sale of Mr Rallett's land and residence, Meauee, for the sum of £200. Approved.

From the Napier Committee, recommending that the salary of Mr A. B. Thomson, headmaster, be calculated as upon the September quarter, as from the prevalence of measles a large number of pupils had been absent. Approved ; also similar rule to apply to Gisborne and Waipukurau. From the same, recommending the application of the householders at Port Ahuriri re enlarging the area of that district, and pointing out the best boundary. Approved. From the same, recommending tie appointment of Misa Doar, of Eiverton, as infant mistress. Approved. From Education Office, Wellington, directing attention to Gazette, November 10, reserving laud at Patutabi for a school

of the Government subsidy, and pointing out that the district had done more to help itself than any other in the way of building schcol house and teacher's residence, »vbicb buildings are now in want of repair. The Board decided to ask the Committee to forward estimate of cost of erection of a new school-room, and of putting present building in repair. Sundry telegrams from Education Department, notifying earns of money placed to Board's credit. BCirOLAHSHIPS, The sub-committee appointed at a former meeting submitted a number of recommendations relating to scholarships, and the bonuses to be paid to teachers on the results of the annual examinationg. The recommendations of the committee were approved, and the scholarship regulations were ordered to be forwarded to the Minister of Education for his approval. BONUSES TO TEA.CHEBS The bonuses to teachers are based on the following scale: —To certificated teachers who have passed 75 per cent, on the standard examinations, £20 ; 70 per cent., £15; below 70 per cent., £10. To licensed teachers and assistants: above 75 per cent., £7 10s; above 70 per cent., £5; under 70 per cent., £3 15s. To pupil teachers of the third and fourth year : above 75 per cent., £3 ; above 70 per cent., £2. The bonuses ■■' amounted to £451. TENDERS. Tenders were received for additions to the Clive md Hastings school-houses, but as they were far in excess of the grant, as agreed at the last meeting, none were accepted.

The Board then adjourned till the third Tuesday in February.
