TAUPO.
December 19. The ascent to the volcano of Tongariro was successfully made by Mr Manson, an American tourist, who, with five guides, climbed to the summit of the crater of Otiwia, on Wednesday last. He describes the volcano as being active, the geyser throwing streams of boiling mud fully 500 feet high. The interior of the cone is surrounded by some thirty or more boiling springs and sulphur steam-holes. The altitude on the cone is 7650 feet. The thermometer registered six degrees below zero, and the p?rty were compelled through a snow-storm to remain in the crater all night, and were nearly perished with cold. This is the first pakeha whom the Ngatitamas have permitted to make trie accent of the sacred mountain ; others have attempted it, but were captured by the natives and denuded. The natives named Monson Tongariro. The burning mountain is in the King country, and this concession to the pakeha may be considered as strong evidence of their good feeling and the gradual break of tbe animosity which has hitherto existed between the two races.
