December 19. The police authorities have definitely decided to take action against the gentlemen who were engaged in sweeps at the Hutt races. The cases will be heard in the course of a day or two. Tbe Chief Justice returned from Nelson this morning. His Excellency the Governor, Lady Gordon, and family, leave for Lyttleton by tbe Hinemoa at eight o'clock to-night, and are expected to be absent about eight or ten days. Mr and Mrs A. Morey and Elizabeth Stewart were to-day committed for trial on a charge of stealing a watch and a sum of £6 17s 6d. A meeting will be held to-night to consider the advisability of forming a new gas company. Three judges of the Supreme Court meet iv a few days to draw up regulations under the Election Petitions Act, this step being rendered necessary, as it is understood that several petitions in connection with the recent elections will be presented.
