CHRISTCHURCH.

December 16,

To-day being the anniversary of the province, it was observed as a close holiday, and tho Government offices, except tbe Post and Telegraph, were closed. A special service was held in the Cathedral. The athletic sports in Hagley Park were most numerously attended, and upwards of 2,000 Sunday School children are holding a picnic at Papauui. At night there will be a grand display of fireworks iv Hagley Park, followed by a torchlight procession of the fire brigades. The volunteers are holding a review at Lyttelton. "The newly-elected Mayor of Christchurch gives a grand banquet to-night to celebrate his installation, upwards of one hundred and fifty invitations being issued. His Excellency the Governor will be present. The Wilhelmj concert last night was a great success.
