HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY NOMINATIONS.

Hastings, December 2. Mr Wellwood proposed Capt. Russell. He said he did so, because Capt. Russell bad supported Mr Ormond against the Government. Mr Danvere seconded. Mr George Heslop proposed Mr Sutton. He claimed that Mr Sutton had supported the Counties Act against Mr Ormond, and had shown himself by bis administration of the Act suitable. He had kept his pledges ; had been consistent; ■was opposed by parties who supported him before; had not changed his coat, and had fought his way honestly and consistently. Mr Collinge seconded. Captain Russell addressed the meeting. He said nothing except that he once represented the county districts. Mr Sutton regretted that Mr Wellwood, who had proposed him previously, was now weighed against him, and the only reasons he gave was that he had not changed his opinions becaHse others had. He had not heard before that Captain Russell was openly opposing the Government, but he accepted the position, and was prepared to ask the electors to decide that question. The show of hands was :—Russell 16 ; Sutton, 13. A poll was demanded.
