W. J. Graham, alias Daniel Mann, was charged by J. G. Macfarlane, storekeeper of Onga Onga, with unlawfully and knowingly passing a valueless cheque (or £4 on the complainant with intent to defraud. The defendant pleaded guilty. Mr Macfarlane stated that on Saturday last the defendant came to his store, and said ho wanted a pair of tweed trousers. He then asked for a blank cheque, saying he had an account at the Bank of New Zealand, and that be was going to shear at Colonel Herrick's station. He filled up the cheque for £4, for which he received the trousers, Mr Maefar lane's cheque for £2, and the balance in cash. It was afterwards ascertained that the defendant bad no account at the bank. Sergeant Kidd reported that there were four previous convictions against the defendant. The bench sentenced him to six months' imprisonment with hard labor. Tbe cheque for £2 was found on the defendant and ordered to be returned to Mr Macfarlane
A man named Jone_ was charged by Mrs Partington with using abusive language towards her at the Kaikora Hotel. The case had been adjourned from last Wednesday in consequence of Sergeant Kidd being unable to obtain a bench. In the meantime Mrs Partington had told tbe police that she wished to withdraw the charge, but without giving the defendant notice. Mr Guy, on behalf of the defendant, applied for costs, as he had a good defence if the informant had attended tbe Court. The bench dismissed the case, allowing 10s for the defendant's expenses.
