HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Council met at noou to-day. Present — Councillors Hutton (in the chair), Torr, Bennett, J. N. Williams, Rymer, Kinross, and Tanner. Mr Torr moved that Mr J. N. Williams be Chairman of the Council for the ensuing twelve months. Mr Kinross seconded the motion. Mr Bennett thought the Council ought to congratulate themselves on the result N of the elections. Every member had been returned unopposed. Their Chair-
man was to be congratulated on the way in which the business of the Council had been conducted during the year. He had nothing to say against Mr Williams as Chairman of the Council. A chairman should not occupy the chair continuously. If a change was desirable there could be no better claimant than Mr Williams. He thought, however, that Mr Sutton's term ot office had been so satisfactory to the ratepayers that he would propose that he occupy the chair for the ensuing year. Mr Rymer seconded the amendment. Mr Tanner thought that the energies of Mr Sutton bad been greatly taxed during the past year. Mr Sutton, bav : ng been a member of the House ot Representatives, gave him a position in which he could be useful to the country. Now, however, matters were changed, and every member of the Council should be prepared to take his turn at the wheel. He should have been very glad to have taken the office himself, but his coming departare from New Zealand prevented hira from thinking of it. Mr Bennett would have made an excellent chairman, and he should have been glad to have supported him. Every member of the Council should be prepared to fake their share of the work. He would support Mr Williams, because he thought him a capable man. The question was then put tbat Mr J. N. Williams be Chairmaa of the Council. Messrs. Tanner, Kinross, Williams, and Torr, voted for the motion, and Messrs. Rymer and Bennett said " No." After a considerable amount of correspondence had been considered, Mr Tanner moved a vote of thanks to Mr Sutton for the manner in which he had conducted the business of the Council during the past three years. Mr Kinross seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously. Mr Sutton thanked the members present for their kindly expression of feeling towards himself. He trusted that all the present members would be returned at the next election. The Council then adjourned.
