AUCKLAND.

October 22. There has been a good deal of speculation as to how Sir Arthur Gordon received intelligence of the native crisis in this colony.'and it was erroneously stated that a telegram was sent by way of Cooktown. The conjectures have been set at rest by the arrival of the Southern Cross frora Fiji. It now turns out that the intelligence was conveyed to Levuka by that vessel, and vtry soon aft6r her arrival steam was got up on the Emerald, and Sir Arthur set out under full steam for New Zealand. Whether Sir Arthur Gordon obtained tbe information from a telegram or a private source does not appear. A report obtained currency in Fiji that war had actually broke out in New Zealand. The telephone exchange now numbers fifty members. It will probably be extended to the various suburbs and to the gaol and hospital. Captain Gilbert Mair was a passenger by the Macgregor for Waitara en route for Parihaka, to take command of a corps for bush operations. Numbers of men are offering their services for the Armed Constabulary, but none have been engaged, as certain forms have to be gone through before the men can be accepted. _^ (For continuation of news see fourthpage.j , — It has now been decided beyond a doubt by all the leading lights of tbe age that the wave of heat which lately passed through England is coming for us in a direit line. The ladies of Napier would do well to avail themselves of the splendid values we offer in Sunshades, 2/9, 3/6, 4/6, to 30/ ; also, Parasols, 10/6 to 30/.—Combs & Co. ■
