WELLINGTON.
October 20. Mr Bryce left for the West Coast by this morning's coach. Mr Russell, a candidate for the Foxton seat, addressed the electors at Foxton last night, and intimated that he would support the Government. A vote of confidence was carried. The following intercolonial weather exchange has been received:—Sydney, Wednesday evening. S.W. gales with rain still prevail on the east coast of Australia, the depression' reported yesterday as off Sydney having moved very little to the eastward. The barometer at Albany registers 30-4, at Borda 30-3, at Portland and Hobart 30*2, and at Sydney 29-6. Respecting the native interference with settlers at Cape Egmont, Ministers have received the following information : —lt appears that a man named Fleming and his mate were working on their sections yesterday morning, cutting and carrying posts. About fifty Maoris came and ordered them to leave off work, at the same time taking back the posts which Fleming had brought out of the bush. The Maoris using Maori and English, told Fleming and his mate "To stop work." More than 200 posts were taken off the land and thrown away, some in the flax, some in the fern, and some in the swamp. Posts that were too heavy to be carried were chopped in two. Other fencing work was interferred with. After the Maoris had thus stopped the two men from working they went away. Ten publicans have been summoned for adulterating spirits.
