HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 17
The Council met at 10.30 a.tn Present: All the members. CORRESPOND ENCE.
The Chairman read a letter which he had written to the Minister of Public Works requesting to be furnished with the usual authority for the purpose of spending the sum of £2000 on the road from Kuripapanga bridge to Taruarau range. The reply was to the effect that it would be necessary to furnish some particulars. This the Chairman promised to do on the completion of the survey now proceeding. A telegram from the Minister of Lands, stating that the surplus land fund would be divided amongst the local bodies in the same manner as last year. From the Minister of Justice, requesting that a return might be forwarded to him of the names of the existing Ridings and Road Boards, and also that the number of ratepayers in each be defined. The Chairman informed the Council that this return had been furnished.
The Chairman informed the Council that he had telegraphed to Ministers requesting to know when the subsidies would be paid to the Road Boards and Counties. A reply had been received that they would be paid shortly. The Chairman also informed the Council that he had drawn the attention of the Colonial Secretary to the fact that Wednesday, the 9th proximo, the day appointed by the Act for the election of councillors was the Prince of Wales' birthday, and requesting to know if the elections were to take place on that date. The reply was to the effect that the elections would be postponed until the 16 th proximo, under section 211 of the Counties Act. INSPECTOR OP SLAUGHTER HOUSES. The Inspector reported all the houses under his control to be in good condition. ROAD OVERSEER'S REPORT. The Road Overseer's report was read, in which he suggested that the road between Taradale and the Waverley Hotel be metalled. This was agreed to. OMAHU QUARRY. The Chairman informed the Council that he had interviewed Eenata about arrangements for quarrying at Omabu for the use of the County. The chairman was instructed to correspond further with Renata on the subject. OMAHU BRIDGE. On the motion of Mr Williams, the Road Overseer was instructed to make good tbe approaches to the Omahu side of Omahu bridge by erecting two wings. Mr Ton* drew attention to the bad approach to the Petane bridge on the town side. The clerk was instructed to draw the attention of the Municipal authorities to the matter. APPOINTMENT OP COUNTY RANGER. There were eighteen applications for the office of County Ranger, and the Council decided not to accept any of the applications, but to divide the County into two districts, making the present coarse of tbe Ngarurnro the boundary, and directed that a circular be sent to the tenderers asking them to send tenders stating at what price they would be agreeable to do either district for, bearing in mind that the Ranger must reside in whichever district he is appointed to, and that the district includes all Road Board and County roads situated therein. It was agreed that Messrs Rymer, Sutton, and Tanner meet next Monday at 11 a.m. to decide upon a Ranger for each of the districts. PTJKETAPU ROAD. Mr Bennett moved that the secretary be instructed to write to Mr Bicknell asking on what terms he would allow the County to make a road through his land so as to avoid going on the river bed, and that the secretary lay the correspondence before the next meeting of Council. Seconded by Mr Williams pro forma, and agreed to. BALANCE SHEET. The balance for the half-year, shewing an expenditure of £7378 6s 4d was laid on the table.
The Council then adjourned till November 83rd at noon.
SPECIAL MEETING
A special meeting was held at noon to-day to consider the slaughter-house bye-laws. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Bennett, seconded by Mr Tanner, that the bye-laws aa published be confirmed.
