Sir Gavin Duffy, who was announced as a probable candidate for the vacancy in the representation of county Meath, Ireland, caused by the resignation of Mr Sullivan, has announced that he has abandoned his intention of entering Parliament at this present juncture. The cotton spinners of Lancashire have carried out their threat to stop working in order to checkmate tbe scheme of the ring of Liverpool cotton speculators, and the manufacturers have, with scarcely any exceptions, agreed to close their mills for a time. Much uncertainty exists in consequence in the cotton trade. Disturbances of a dangerous character have broken out at New Orleans, in the State of Lauissania, arising out of the action taken by the cotton spinners of Lancashire in closing their mills. New Orleans is one of the principal shipping ports for tbe despatch of cotton to Liverpool, and the riots were directed against the ship-owners, whose combination had brought about the stoppage of the mills. The British and foreign consuls stationed at New Orleans have represented the serious aspect of affairs to tbe United States Government, and have demanded that be sent to the city to protect the shipping. The commission is authorised to make the most searching investigations into the causes which have led to the rapid spread of intemperance, and to recommend the means best adapted to restrain the drinking propensities of tbe people. In consequence of the continued spread of the Socialist movement in Germany, the Imperial Government has decided to take severe measures with the view of the suppression of the movement. A large number of persons implicated have accordingly been expelled from Berlin. The All England Eleven have started for America to play a series of matches in the United States aud Canada prior to their arrival in Anstralia. Before leaving England they were entertained at a public banquet at Nottingham. Shrewsbury, of Nottingham, and one of the best batsmen of the team, being unable to leave on account of illness. The latest accounts from the vinegrowing diatriete in France are very gloomy, aud it is believed that this season's yield will show a great falling off.

Hopbloom, the noted hurdle racer by Pavinseau out of Coquisance. who won the Welter Handicap at New-Market in July, 1880, and the Grand Hurdle Race at Sandown Park in the same year, has been purchased with the view of sending him to Australia for stud purposes. Great reductions have been made in the strength of the Greek army, which was increased some months ago in view of threafened hostilities with Turkey. The cession of the territory having now been peacefully accomplished, the army has again been placed on a peace footing. A fearful thunder storm has occurred in Naples. Eight persona were killed by lightning, and much damage was done to property. The gratuity of £1000 voted by the House of Commons at the instance of Sir J. B. Wilmot as compensation to Edmund Galley is now available. Galley and his family are living in New South Wales, and are desirous of remaining there.
