WAIPAWA.

(from a correspondent.) September 20. To-day the adjourned meeting of the Waipawa Licensing Bench was held at the Court House, for the purpose of considering objections made by toe police against the renewal of the license of the Waipawa Hotel. Mr Lee (of Napier) appeared for the licensee (Mr Mulinder), and urged the bench to withdraw the charges, stating that Mr Mulinder had secured a permanent tenant in the person of Mr M» Hayden \\ate of -Napier), who was in every way suuaiHe to conducr-the hotel in a proper manner. Taking these circumstances into consideration, the Commissioners agreed to withdraw the charges, oti condition that the license be at once transferred, and ibat Mr Maliader does not again at any future period apply for a license for the house. Messrs bierrick (chairman), Bridge, and Lawrence, were the presiding Commissioners. A very sociable evening was spent tonight at the Oddfellows' Hall by.the greater number of our townspeople, a ball being given by Mr Fred. Collins (son of Mr E. Collins, a very old and well known settler in this district) in the occasion of his marriage with Mies Maria Ellingham, of Te Aute. The marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. C. Eccles, at St. Peter'e, the church being well filled by people of all denomiuations. During the evening the bride and bridegroom were the recipients of a very handsome timepiece, presented by a number of their Waipawa friends and well-wishers. The presentation was made by Mr H. J. Baker in a very happy speech, during which he jocularly remarked that he hoped the young couple would steer a straight and honest course through life, and run like the clock— on tick. Mr Collins made a suitable reply. Several songs were given at intervals during the evening. The proceedings broke up at about b , a.m., hearty cheers being given for the newly-married couple. May they live long, be prosperous, and die happy. About a dozen persons attended the annual meeting of the tVaipukurau Town Cricket Club on Monday evening at Waipukurau. • A report and balancesheet was presented and adopted, which showed that the club have the handsome sum of £12 18s lying to their credit at the bank, besides a quantity of cricketing material, &c. A new committee was formed, which consists of Messrs Ord, Merrylees, W. Jones, J. Reed, and Hartley, with Mr R. Monteith as hon. sec. and treasurer. It was unanimously agreed, on the motion ofDr Reed, to alter the Dame of the club, and call it the " Waipukurau District Cricket Club." This was considered advisable, in order to "secure players- resident outside.the township as members of the club to play in future matches. Under the old regime the Town C.C. had some difficulty to raise a team. About a dozen new members were then enrolled, after which the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman, Mr H. Wilding, which was carried.
