CHRISTCHURCH.
September 14. At a meeting of the Industrial Association last night a sub-committee wa9 appointed to consider the question of holding an industrial exhibition at Christchurch. At the Farmer's Co-operative Association meeting yesterday it was stated that one firm of importers in Christchurch had made £20,000 in one season from reapers and binders. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday, respecting the proposed direct steam service to England, a resolution was carried to the effect that instead of the Parliamentary Committee's proposal amounting to a £60,000 annual subsidy, arrangements should be made temporarily at a cost not exceeding £25,000 per annum for the extension of the present Australian services to New Zealand and in the event of these failing the Government should invite tenders in England and the colonies contemplating the payment of a certain sum as a subsidy, simply without any condition as to participation by the colony in tbe net earnings.
