A friend of a writer in a weekly contemporary lately took a bad half-sovereign, a real genuine duffer, bearing the image and superscription of Queen Victoria, and of the nominal value of ten shillings, but in reality a dangerous possession, worth nothing at all. The owner asked sundry experts if it might not possibly be good ; but they were unanimous that it was not; and so lie put it away in a corner of his pocket and resigned hirnseff to the loss. But it happened that in the evening he took a cab and drove about to so many places that, on feeling for change, he discovered that he had not enough to pay the fare — which, liberally considered, amounted to some fivo shillings. Forgetting all about the half-sovereign being bad, ho he handed it to the cabman, and asked for five shillings change, which the man gave him, and then drove off hurriedly. Just then the gentleman remembered, and not wishing to "do" the cabby, called out, " Here—that moneys bad ! " " It's quite good enough for you ! " retorted the man, turning round with a grin. The gentleman looked at the two half-crowns, and at once suspected that they were bad, as proved to be the case; but the ling drive had been good enough ; and on the whole the cabby hardly got the best of it.
