AUCKLAND.
September 8. Last evening the wife of Constable Naughton was walking behind her hueband across the railway bridge at Helensville, and was blown off. Her husband beard tbe screams, and jumped off, in
the darkness landing in the mud, and becoming so deeply imbedded that he could not move. A child saw the occurrence, and ran to the station, and Mr Hull, the railway porter, jumped into the creek and caught Mrs Naugbton, who had drifted a hundred yards with her head under water. Hull was unable to land owing to the mud, but held the woman's head out of the water until both were rescued by a boat. Animation was restored with difficulty. Naugbton was hauled safely out of the mud by ropes. The Kingite Maoris have resolved to open Kawhia harbor to pakeha traders.
