We learn that J. W. Carlilfy Esq., and Patue.k Sterling T<-st_., entered into partnership as from yesterday, the Ist; September, as barristers and solicitors. The total Customs revenue collected at the port of Napier during the month of Ausrust -was £3674 7s Id, as against £2400 9s 2d for the corresponding month last year. A committee meeting- was held to-day of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society for the purpose of arranging th 6 details of the forthcoming show, and the appointment of stewards and judges. Messrs Coleman and Winter were authorised to secure suitable rooms for the society's committee meetings. A private telegram from Gisborne informs us that Pollard's Pinafore Troupe closed a very successful season at that town, and leave for Napier to-night. We are sure th_t the :< Juveniles" will be heartily welcomed on their return. ..They give their opening performance to-morrow night. The Rev. C. Penney presided last night at th" first oi' the series of lectures in connection v?ith the United Methodist Free (■but ah. A -written lecture by the Rev. L. B. Brown was read by Mr H. Hill; ifc waa an interesting account, of a visit paid to Italy in 1876, and was entitled "Rambler in Rome." The first train from Makatoko this morning was delayed forty minutes at Kopua owiner to tho engine being jerked off the line through a stone having got in between the points. Good speed was, however, made from Kopua, so that the train was only twenty minutes behind time on arrival at Napier. The Lyons' Tourists give their last performance this evening at the Theatre Royal, and offer for the occasion an exceptionally good programme, to which we refer our readers. At the performance last night there was a fair attendance, and the versatile talents of the Tourists were highly appreciated and applauded. Our Waipawa'correspondent, under date Ist instant, writes:—The well-known Billy Swanson was " run in " by Constable Brosnaham between eight and nine o'clock this morning on a charge of drunkenness. He was subsequently brought before the Court, and fined £1. Another case of "drunk" is at present awaiting disposal. We are indebted to Dr. Menzieß for the Hospital returns for the past month of August, which are as follow : —ln hospital at beginning of month, 18 males, 7 females ; admitted during month, 8 males and 6 females; discharged, 10 males and 5 females; died, 2 males, 1 female ; remaining in hospital, 14 males and 7 females. The neighborhood of the Caledonian Hotel was alarmed this morning by the sound of a tremendous crash, and a rush was made to the Horse Bazaar, from whence the noise proceeded. Ifc appears that, in the progress of some improvements being made in the Horse Bazaar by Messrs Monteith and Co., a portion of the gallery fell. Beyond the smash of some timber and injury to a buggy no other damage was done. The Hospital Committee meeting, called for this afternoon, lapsed for want of a quorum, the only members present being "M essrs Winter, M. R. Miller, McKay, and Tanner. One of the subjects to be dealt with was the appointment of a secretary, for which thirteen applications have been sent in. A recommendation of the visiting committee is, we understand, to make Miss Stenson nurse, and to appoint a matron. A meeting of the Committee will be held on Monday next at 7-30 p.m. Two charges against the man Rendle have already been disposed of, and His Worship has intimated that he will commit the prisoner upon both charges. The third charge, fchafc of opening a letter, was proceeding as we went to press, and there are still three cases to be gone into, one for stealing a letter, the property of Mr Michaelson; another for stealing a letter, the property of Messrs Price and Innes; and a third charge under the Vagrancy Act for being in possession of burglarious tools, j To the Editor: Sir, —Your paragraph in answer to a correspondent's query re your previous remarks on stamps and their disposal amounts simply to an excuse rather than an explanation, for there is no fixed age afc which a boy ceases to be a schoolboy and becomes an office " youngster," nor is there any rule observed by the Post Office authorities preventing a younger boy or girl from being a channel of communication with the Post Office. The facts to me appear that by any pubterfage the Government seek to possess themselves of any floating cash regardless of its effect upon the individual or national morality.—l am, &c, Yottng New Zealand. Under the heading " Society," the readers of the Auckland Observer are treated to such brilliant and strikingly original pars, as the following, which we (Sydney Bulletin) clip from a late issue :—"' Doctor' Coupland looked very well in his long-tailed blue on Sunday. . . . The fair-haired tenor of St. Matthew's has left for the South. . . Jack Balneavis is still surveying Gisborne." And this is exactly the kind of rubbish with which every paper yet started in " imitation" of the Bulletin nauseates its readers.
