August 31. At the wool sale to-day 7900 bales were offered. The tone of the auction was quiet. A poor selection of wool was offered. The steamship Protos arrived to-day from Melbourne. Her cargo of meat, consisting of 200 carcasses of beef and 4000 sheep, is, so far as can be ascertained, in excellent condition.
