HOW JIMMY WAS RETAINED.
When Andrew Jackson was President of the United States, Jimmy O'Neill, the Irish doorkeeper of tho White House, Washington, was a marked character. Hβ had his foibles, which often offended the fastidousness of the President's nephew and secretary, M!:vjor Donelson, who caused His dismissal on an average about once a week ; but on appeal to the higher court, the verdict was ilways reversed by the good nature of the old general. Once however Jimmy was rm'lty of some unerant offence, and after summoned before the President himself, was thus addressed : ' Jimmy, I have borne with you for years in spite of all complaints ; but this goes beyond my powers of •ndurance.' ' -nd do you believe the «tory ?' asked Jimmy. ' Certainly', answered •■•he General ; ' I hnve just heard it from 'wo senators.' 'Firifh,' retorted Jimmy, 'it r he-licvpd nil that twenty senators say about you, it , ' Vt'le T'd think you was fit to be President. , ' Pshaw, Jimmy,' concluded the Ipnpi-i! • r-lorir nut, and CO riark IOVOUI , duty t but be more cm'fiil !' .Hmmy n. • .
