CHRISTCHURCH.
August 19. At a meeting of the Benevolent Association yesterday the receipts of a subsidy from the Government amounting to £850 was announced, It was agreed to dispense with the &oup kitchen in future. The operations of the Association are to be clearly denned at an adjourned meeting next week. Mr T. Dunning, of D'unedin, is said to be negotiating for tbe purchase of the Theatre Royal and tbe adjoining hotel. A trotting match for three miles took place yeeterday between Porter's Black Boy and M'Carthy's chestnut mare, the former giving 100 yards start. The match was won by tbe latter. At the Magistrate's Court this morning Henry Blackett, a son of tbe Mayor of Rangiora,John Hossack, and John Saneom, were charged with wilful damage to the type of the Liberty office, where they went yesterday to obtain satisfaction for certain paragraphs published in Liberty. On the application of Mr Stringer a remand was granted till Wednesday morning. (For continuation of news see fourth page.*)
