COMMERCIAL.
Goldsbrough's monthly Melbourne cm cular of August 1, 1881, has the following : —Wool.—We have nothing of importance to report in this market, owing to the limited arrivals, which, as usual at this season of the year, consist of miscellaneous lots of greasy, and small parcels of scoured, from country fellmongera. About 500 bales have changed hands during the month, principally private sales, afc prices fully equal folate quotations. The local demand still continues, and no difficulty is experienced of all coming forward. We learn that the nexfc series of London wool sales will commence on the 23rd inst. with a pvnhnble available qi-nnh'rv cf 350,"0 ft hales, and we trust that the firmer tendency oi-serv.-ble for most -Anst----')'m descriptions towards the close of the last series will he maintained, 'he present state of the last series will be maintained. The present state of the home trade, however, is not sufficiently buoyant to warrant much advance in mines Pur advices from the country are not so favorable as we could wish. In portions of New Pouth Wales rain is badly wanted, more especially in the eastern and north eastern districts. Frosts of exceptional severity have been general over a large proportion of the colony, which has prevented the grass from growing, and unless heavy rains follfw the prospects for the coming spring will not be encouraging. Some slight showers, however, have fallen in various parts within the last, few days, ar>d indications of v furl her change are reported. In Victoria, with the excepj ion of a portion of the "'estern district, pastoral prospects are brighter, but n vpturn of more genial weather would be beneficial to the young stock.
