August 15.
The ceremony of conferring degrees at the New Zealand University took place in the Provincial Council Chambers at noon to-day. Mr Tancred, Chancellor of the University presiding. There was a large attendance of spectators. Professor Haslam in presenting Miss Helen Connon said she was the first lady student who had received the degree of Master of Arts from an English University. After degrees had been conferred the chancellor delivered a speech' in the course ol which he remarked on the very searching character of the last examination, and the desirability of the University obtaining the privilege of returning a representative to Parliament. August 16.
Referring to the Tararua disaster, the Press this morning says, as sure information has been obtained that the bodies of Dr. and Mrs Campbell and two of their children were washed ashore and buried at Fortrose cemetry, arrangements have been made for their removal to the church and reinterment here. The funeral will take place in a few days.
