WAIROA.

(fEOM OUR OWN COBKESrONDINT.) August 11,1881. l Mr George Mayo, lessee of the Clyde domain here, has at present over twenty sheep to the acre in a paddock less than five acres in extent, and the sheep look in splendid condition, too. One fact like this is worth a column of the "puff direct."

Amusements are very scarce just now. Football does not seem to draw out much

enthusiasm from our youth, because, I suppose, it isD't in them ; and cricket— that noble game—is, I hear, in extremis. On Tuesday evening a report was pet in circulation to the effect that some natives at Whakaki had discovered a portion of the remains of the boy Russell, drowned off the Government wharf about three weeks ago. I find, on making enquiries, that tbe whole thing was a miserable joke. The policeman went out to Whakaki and learned from the natives that they had seen nothing of the body. Tbe fabricators of tbe canard should "feel intensely proud of their exploit, and no doubt they do. The people of Frasertown are about to follow the example of their Wairoa brethren, and go in for church-building. Subscriptions are now being collected for the erection of a small Anglican church in that township, and a tea meeting is to be held on Friday in aid of the funds. The Guardian states that Mr T. Powdrell, our esteemed townsman, at one time owned Daphne, the dam of the now famous racehorse Iroquoi?, winner of the Derby and other events of importance in English racing circles. On the 17th inst., the County Council will Bit, that is, it will if a quorum can he obtained, Or Fraser is in Melbourne, and Cr Duff is in Scotland, so that unless the Mchawka members roll up, another postpoement Is on tbe board. Waikaremoana has practically only one member now, the county chairman, but he is a host in himself.
