It having definitely transpired that the report received on the Bth (that the sentence of death passed upon Midhat Pasha for complicity in the murder of the feultau Abdul Aziz had been commuted to banishment to Arabia) was incorrect, and that the death sentence iB to be carried out, the British Government bag sent a communication to the Earl of Dufferin, Ambassador at Constantinople, instructing him to intercede with the Porte on behalf of Midhat, and to urge the commutation of tbe sentence of death. In the action Clarke versus Bradlaugb, to recover penalties from the latter for sitting and voting in the House of Commons, without first taking the oath, a verdict has now been finally returned for the plaintiff. July 23. A very severe storm has passed over the Shetland Islands. Eleven fishing vessels have been totally wrecked, and seventy fishermen have been drowned.
