WAIPAWA COUNTY ROADS.

[To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sib, —As I believe you are of a philanthropic turn of mind, and interested also in the feelings of horseflesh, I desire the aid of your valuable paper in exposing public abuse. lam a constant traveller on the road between Napier and Wellington, and therefore I, and many others who travel on the same road, are very much interested in its state. Now, although it is commendable in people to mend their ways, still it is to be desired that the mending should be an improvement. The road for about three miles on Mataiwi has certainly been mended but not improved. A vile compound of mud and big stones has been laid over what was a good road ; rather, I should say with a view to kill horses and try the patience of travellers than to assist the travelling public. I believe this is not the fault of tbe contractor, but of the road overseer Mr Mackay, since that gentleman both determined whence this sloppy deposit should be taken, and also passed the contract. I believe it also is owing to the same gentleman that the public road at Woodville has not been widened, although funds have been voted for that purpose.—l am &c, Veritas. July 21, 1881.
