July 22. At the Magistrate's Court this morning Patrick Clancy was charged on remand with unlawfully wounding Tim McAuliffe, the well-known amateur pedestrian, with a pen-knife. The evidence went to show that the prosecutor struck the first blow, and Clancy drew a knife and used it in self-defence. Mr Beetham said he considered that McAuliffe had brought the assault on himself, and sympathised to some extent with Clancy. To say

bow far Clancy was justified, however, in usiug a knife in self-defence must be for a jury to decide, and the accused was committed for trial at the next Bitting of the District Court, his own recogoizance of £50 beiDg accepted.
