HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONDAY, JUNE 20.
The above Council met at 2 p.m. Present:—Messrs T. Tanner, J. N. Williams, J. Bennett, J. Torr, and G. Rymer. In the absence of Mr F. Sutton, Mr Tanner was voted to the chair.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
A petition from certain residents in Clive was presented and read, praying that an open drain opposite the West Clive Hotel might be filled in. A report having been read from the inspector upon the sabjeet, it was resolved that the clerk should write to the proprietor of the hotel to inform him that unless he reopened the two drains blocked up by him legal proceedings would be taken. The following correspondence was read and dealt with : —
From the Borough Council, in reference to the cesspit at the rear of the Government buildings.—The nuisance being on Government property it was decided that the Council had nothing to do with the matter.
From Mr C. B. Winter, forwarding £75 as the contribution of the Bank of Australasia towards the construction of the Omahu Redclyffe road. From the Road Overseer, recommending that the approach to the Ngaruroro bridge, Farndon side, be widened and fenced—The widening only was ordered to be done.
From Mr C. D. Kennedy, reporting the slow progress made with the Kuripapanga bridge, and stating that he had notified the contractor that the penalties would be enforced in the event of the work being uncompleted on the termination of the contract time.
From the same, reporting completion of Redclyffe bridge, and recommending payment of balances due, £1218 Is lid —Approved.
From Inspector of Slaughter-houses, stating that all the establishments under his supervision had been satisfactorily conducted.
From the Under Secretary for Public Works, stating that the Council's application for a grant of £30C0 towards the inland Patea-road will be considered when the estimates are framed.
From Mr Collinge, requesting information as to how he must proceed against persons keeping unregistered dogs.—The Clerk stated that the required information had been furnished.
The Road Overseer reported that the authorised repairs on the Napier-Te Aute road were being carried out, and that the bridge at the southern end of tbe county had been repaired. He recommended tbat ten chains of the Havelock-Hampded road, between the railway crossing at Hastings and Heretaunga, be metalled at a cost of £30. The authorised repairs on the Maraeka-kaho-Hampden, Tareha's Bridge-Ha-kawa, and Taradale-Redclyffe roads were being proceeded with. The metalling of the Redclyffe-Omahu road had commenced ; and the metalling contract in the Petane valley was nearly completed. Surfacemen were employed on the Puke-
tapu and Patea roads, which were in good order for traffic. He recommended that the road between the Western Spit and Petane school-house be repaired where necessary; and that the approaches to the Waiohiki side. of the Redclyffe bridge be planted with willows. The report was adopted and the works recommended were authorised.

For formation Oamahu-road, No. 1 contract, J. Hennessy, 6s B£d per chain (accepted ; J. Lynn, 7s; J. Kelligher, Bssd; Barrett and M'Shane, 8s 6d; M'Neil and Brandon, 10s 6d ; P. Diamond, lis 2d; E. Brenan, 14s; Lincoln, lis. No. 2 contract, Barrett and M'Shane, 9* 10d (accepted); R. M'Cartney, 10s; J. Lynn, 12.; J. Kelligher, 12a; S. Paramore, 14s; P. Diamond, 14s. Advertising: Tflegbaph, (accepted). Mr Collinge was re-appointed ratecollector at the same rate of remuneration as last year.
The accounts for the month were passed, leaving the Council with a bank overdraft of £2352 17s Bd.
Mr Bennett gave notice that at the next meeting he would move that a ranger be appointed to impound cattle straying on country roads. The Council then adjourned.
